3 Mario Badescu Products You Probably Never Heard Of, But Need to Know About

You’ve gone through countless Mario Badescu Facial Sprays and always stock your medicine cabinet with a bottle of Drying Lotion for emergencies. You know the Enzyme Cleansing Gel and Drying Cream like the back of your hand—but what you may not know is that there are over 150 products in the Mario Badescu Skin Care line. What you see in store is but a fraction of our complete collection, so we’re about to give you a primer on some of our most beloved but under-the-radar products.

Let’s start off easy with three products you probably never heard of, but need to know about.

What it is: This is a unique cream exfoliant that rolls away dulling dead skin cells. Lactic Acid and Peach Extract are the key players in this formula—and when combined with the physical rolling, back-and-forth motion, this peel helps remove that layer of dulling, dead skin cells so your skin looks soft, smooth, and renewed.

Who it’s for: Almost all skin types. If you have extremely sensitive or delicate skin, are prone to irritation, or are experiencing moderate to severe breakouts, Rolling Cream Peel with A.H.A. isn’t a good fit.

How to use Rolling Cream Peel with A.H.A.: Make sure your skin is completely dry before you apply the cream peel. Use a pea-sized amount and apply a thin layer to the skin (so that you can still see your skin through the layer of peel), avoiding the eye area. Wait a few minutes until you can feel that the product is completely dry, then use your fingertips to gently roll away the cream in back-and-forth motions until the entire cream layer rolls off. Follow with toner to remove any remaining trace of product—and voila! Skin as soft and smooth as can be.

#MBSkinTip: Try using it on your hands and feet for a gentle, exfoliating treatment, too!

What it is: Mysterious as Cream “X” is, it’s a secret superstar in the eyes of our New York City salon aestheticians. This little-known product is actually a super effective and restorative, dry/winter skin solution: it boasts a supremely rich formula that delivers intense moisture while rejuvenating skin. With Salicylic Acid to resurface and a host of hydration powerhouses to replenish, this is a must-have face cream if you have dull, depleted skin.

Who it’s for: Dry skin

How to use Cream “X”: Apply to the face, neck, and décolletage after cleansing and toning (avoiding the eye area). Wearing it during the day? Be sure to pair this with sunscreen!

#MBSkinTip: You know it’s a solid product when makeup artists carry a jar in their kits! When working with clients who have dry skin, makeup artists will use Cream X to help revive parched, tired skin prior to makeup application.

What it is: This is a lightweight, aromatherapeutic body oil designed to help invigorate and soothe. Almond Oil gives it a lovely slip as Eucalytus, Fennel, and Rosemary Oils work their magic. Its distinct herbaceous scent and lingering, cooling touch makes it an essential.

Who it’s for: All skin types

How to use Muscle Oil: Massage 2-3 drops where needed, then layer body lotion on top for additional moisture.

#MBSkinTip: It’s the perfect post-workout treat—but also a savior for hard-working hands and feet. After a long day of writing/typing/standing on your feet all day, massage a few drops into your skin as an at-home spa remedy.

Rose Facial Spray & Other Floral Favorites for Spring Skin

Miranda Priestly might’ve scoffed at the suggestion of florals for spring (brownie points for those who remember the iconic movie moment), but when it comes to skin care, few things feel more fitting in your spring skin care routine than floral-infused formulas and beautiful botanical blends.

These are a few of our floral favorites:

With Extracts of Rose, Gardenia, and Thyme (oh my!), this cult-favorite Mario Badescu facial spray a surefire staple in every medicine cabinet. In fact, we suggest stashing a bottle wherever you can: your desk (or in your drawer to keep away from shamelessly mist-heavy co-workers!), your handbag, and your fridge (for an extra cooling boost).

Gardenia and Rose Extracts are beloved for their ability to help improve moisture levels and Thyme boasts clarifying properties, which makes this mist a favorite no matter your skin type—especially if you embrace the dew.

The name was a dead giveaway, but let’s delve into the botanical extracts that give this mask its name. If we’re sticking to strictly florals, there’s a Gardenia and Evening Primrose infusion—but you’ll also find Olive Leaf Extract in here, too. When combined with other moisturizing ingredients like antioxidant Vitamin E and tempered with natural oil-absorbent minerals, Flower & Tonic Mask is a staple that works to balance your complexion.

You get the deep clean all skin types (including dry and sensitive skin!) need plus skin-smoothing benefits. What’s not to love?

Rosehip is technically the “accessory” fruit of the rose, but let’s not dwell on technicalities and instead, focus on the benefits. Rosehip is known for its antioxidant properties and shown to help improve moisture levels—so when both Rosehip Extract and Rosehip Oil are used in a formula, you know it’s a match made in heaven for dull, dehydrated skin.

Enter Rose Hips Mask, which not only contains both forms of Rosehip, but also ingredients like Extracts of Evening Primrose, Olive Leaf, and Lemongrass in addition to antioxidant Vitamin E, Kaolin Clay, and Zinc Oxide. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes and what you’re left with is a complexion that appears moisturized, soft, and smooth to the touch—with an added youthful glow.

You’ll find Rosehip Extract and Rosehip Oil in our Rose Hips Nourishing Oil, too. Don’t be fooled by the lightweight feel of this facial oil, though: it packs serious punch in the moisture department. Apply it all over or just in targeted areas to help revive dehydrated skin and smooth the appearance of dry, flaky patches.

#MBSkinTip: We love using this multi-purpose oil on our cuticles too! It’s portable size makes it a handbag or deskside staple—so if ever your face or cuticles are in need of a moisture boost, you have your Rose Hips Nourishing Oil at the ready.

Mario Badescu Chamomile Buttermilk Lavender Skin Care

Glycolic Acid tends to get the spotlight in this resurfacing face wash (which should only be used 1-3 times a week in place of your normal facial cleanser!), but there’s also a botanical blend that works to restore balance at the same time.

With floral extracts like Chamomile and Yarrow (plus a botanical blend of Marshmallow—the root, not the puffy hot chocolate topper!), Glycolic Foaming Cleanser is able to address concerns like dullness, congestion, and uneven skin tone and texture without leaving skin feeling tight and dry.

Lactic Acid is the hero ingredient that makes this moisturizer so unique, but the Chamomile Extract is deserving of a mention, too. Buttermilk Moisturizer provides soothing hydration in addition to gentle resurfacing benefits that take dull and dehydrated to smooth and rejuvenated.

And here we have another Chamomile contender, which proves just how classic this floral extract. Designed to deliver soothing moisture and nourish parched skin, Chamomile Night Cream is a rich formula that was designed specifically to comfort dry, sensitive complexions all night long.

If you adore Chamomile in your skin care, pair this night cream with our Chamomile Eye Cream. Just like its face cream counterpart, the eye cream boasts a luxurious texture that makes it a dream for delicate, dehydrated under-eyes.

There will always be a time when your skin craves calm and comfort—no matter your skin type. This calming blend of Chamomile Extract, Lavender Essential Water, and Lavender Oil is enriched with antioxidant Vitamin C to create a facial mist that leaves your complexion balanced and bright.

5 Signs You Need to Deep Clean Your Medicine Cabinet, NOW

You have empty bottles of Glycolic Acid Toner taking up prime real estate. We know you love your toner, but unless you’re a beauty YouTuber racking up used products for an “empties video,” those bottles need to go. You deserve a fresh one!

That pack of face wipes is all dried up. You know you should not be using those as a sole cleansing method, right? (Face wash and eye makeup removers are non-negotiable in every cleansing regimen!) Toss out those wipes, make a pact to never buy them again, and replace an Enzyme Cleansing Gel in its spot.

Your mask is all dried up too, which can mean one of two things: (1) you didn’t like that mask much and still kept it for whatever reason, or (2) you barely reached for it. Masks are supposed to be used regularly—2 time a week—and thus are meant to last a year max. If you’re not sure what kind of mask you should be using, take this skin analysis to get a recommendation from a skincare specialist. And remember: mask often to keep your skin in tip-top shape.

You’re not quite sure what that jar used to be. If the label’s grubby or all worn off, TOSS it. Expired or bacteria-infested profits from being kept too long or stored improperly are no joke. Better to be safe than sorry.

Your cotton swabs are looking a little dusty. Don’t think twice; kick ’em to the curb. Chances are, you’re using them for to dot on your Drying Lotion, and the last thing you want to do is have a whole bunch of germs and dirt further clogging up that pesky spot. Storing your Q-Tips in that mini Diptyque candle may be cute when you #doitforthegram, but it’s not the most sanitary way to do it. If you still want something cute but practical, look for an apothecary jar with a lid.

Best Face Serum for Your Skin Type

Before we dive into the best serums for each skin type, let’s start at the beginning with a frequently asked question:

We get it: It’s hard to know what you actually need or should be using when products are being thrown at you left and right.  So when we’re asked, “Do I really need a serum?” our answer is simple:

Take our skin analysis.

This questionnaire was designed by our skin specialists to help determine the best products for your skin type—including deciding whether or not you need a serum at this point in your life. At the most basic, pared down level, you should be following a regimen that includes a cleanser, toner, eye cream (from your 20s on), moisturizer, exfoliant, and mask. Anything additional would be prescribed based on concerns to help you achieve skin goals.

Incorporate Anti Acne Serum into your evening routine. This balancing serum combines the two most important things that congested, troubled skin needs:

  • Oil-free hydration, and
  • Clarifying properties.

That oil-free hydration comes by way of Glycerin, a classic humectant that works to deliver essential moisture without feeling heavy on skin. Key ingredients like Salicylic Acid and Thyme Extract work help encourage clearer-looking skin.

How to use Anti Acne Serum: This clarifying serum is meant to be used every night or as needed. Before bed (after you’ve cleansed and toned), apply a thin layer on troubled areas. Anti Acne Serum is designed to be worn alone, in place of a traditional evening moisturizer or night cream.

Herbal Hydrating Serum will leave your skin looking dewy and fresh-faced. Ceramides, Ginkgo, and Ginseng are infused to revive, soften, and smooth—making this unique gel a versatile staple in all skin care regimens. It’s water-light in texture and oil-free in formulation, which enables you to effectively hydrate without leaving your T-zone feeling like an oil slick.

How to use Herbal Hydrating Serum: For the super oily, wear this serum on its own in place of a moisturizer. All other skin types can still use this serum, though: simply apply a thin layer over moisturizer/night cream for enhanced hydration and glow.

Vitamin C Serum will be a game-changer for lackluster complexions seeking a boost in radiance. This is a lightweight serum that helps restore youthful luminosity to skin while delivering antioxidant defense against environmental stressors and skin-aging free radicals.

If you’re keen on adding an anti-aging serum to your regimen (whether you’re 20-something or in your 50s), Vitamin C Serum is quickly becoming a beloved medicine cabinet staple for all skin types. Here’s why:

It’s powerful in formulation, but absorbs seamlessly into skin to help brighten uneven skin tone and reduce the appearance of dry fine lines. Vitamin C, Collagen, and Sodium Hyaluronate combine to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and uneven skin tone—leaving all skin types soft, smooth, and glowing.

How to use Vitamin C Serum: Apply 3-4 drops to clean skin every other evening. Follow with your favorite night cream.

Apply Cellufirm Drops under your daily moisturizer or night cream. Uniquely versatile and designed to help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, this serum is a must-have for dry skin. Antioxidant oils soften and nourish as a protein-enriched blend of Collagen. Elastin, RNA, and peptides works to give skin a supple, youthful appearance.

How to use Cellufirm Drops: Apply a few drops to targeted areas that need extra moisture, or apply 4-5 drops all over your face and neck for maximum skin-smoothing benefits. Follow with your daily moisturizer or night cream.

#MBSkinTip: Cellufirm Drops can be used under and around the eye area under your eye cream, too!

Revive dehydrated skin and smooth dry patches with Rose Hips Nourishing Oil. This lightweight yet moisture-intensive facial oil is infused with Rosehip Extract and Rosehip Oil—both known as great sources of essential fatty acids and antioxidant Vitamin C—to provide comforting moisture and reveal softer, more radiant skin.

How to use Rose Hips Nourishing Oil: Massage 2-3 drops on clean skin. Or, apply 1-2 drops to dry patches that need a targeted moisture boost. Follow with moisturizer or night cream.

#MBSkinTip: Roll up your sleeves and customize your glow. Mix a few drops of Herbal Hydrating Serum and Rose Hips Nourishing Oil to get your perfect dewy skin concoction. Use more of the blue when you want to keep it light, or mix in more oil to give your mixture slip and added moisturizing benefits.

Try Hyaluronic Emulsion with Vitamin C or Corrective Complex Emulsion. Both serums have a lightweight slip that absorb beautifully into skin. Hyaluronic Emulsion with Vitamin C is designed to boost moisture and give depleted skin a more youthful, hydrated appearance. Corrective Complex Emulsion also boasts nourishing ingredients to soften and smooth skin, but also contains Oligopeptide-5 for an added anti-aging boost.

How to use both emulsions: Apply 2-3 drops on clean skin, then follow with night cream.

Incorporate Peptide Renewal Serum into your routine to target visible signs of aging and deeply nourish skin. This complex blend of Peptides, Sodium Hyaluronate, and complexion-boosting botanicals is specially formulated to improve the look of depleted, mature skin and reduce the appearance of dry fine lines and wrinkles—leaving the complexion soft, smooth, and supple.

How to use Peptide Renewal Serum: Because of its rich consistency, less is more with this product. Apply 1-2 drops on your face, neck, and décolleté. Wear it alone or layer it under your favorite face cream or night cream.

3 Steps to Protect Your Hair from Damage Before It Starts

Damaging your hair is pretty easy to do, but protecting it from damage takes some serious effort.  Hair can become damaged from everyday styling, so it is important to take preventative measures before your hair becomes damaged.

1. Get Your Collagen –Hair is made of collagen (protein), so it makes sense that adding collagen to your diet will help your hair. Collagen supplements can help hair grow to its optimal length and thickness. Collagen gives your hair its structure and healthy bounce due to it being responsible for the strength and elasticity of your hair.  Collagen is 10 times more elastic than the springs in your bed, so you can imagine what this means for your hair.  As you age, your body’s natural collagen levels decrease which may cause your hair to start thinning and shedding.  Collagen may help strengthen your hair and prevent hair loss due to collagen deficiency. Studies have shown that collagen can help to treat dry, brittle hair by helping maintain the moisture levels of the hair.  If you’re lacking collagen in your diet, it may be helpful to add a collagen supplement such as HAIRFINITY Damage Defense Collagen Booster.

2. Get Your Amino Acids – Proteins are made up of amino acids that give the hair its strength.  You’re your hair lacks amino acids, it is more susceptible to breakage.  So, adding hair strengthening amino acids like HAIRFINITY Volume Builder Amino Acid Booster to your diet will help your hair withstand everyday styling without becoming damaged.

  • Arginine is one of the most important amino acids for hair growth. It produces nitric oxide, a compound which helps improve blood circulation and the supply of nutrients to the hair follicles. This can help improve the very first stages of hair growth. Dietary sources of Arginine include coconut, sunflower seeds, and fish.
  • Lysine help reduce the enzyme shown be a prominent factor in male and female pattern baldness. It can also improve iron absorption to prevent iron deficiency which has been linked to hair loss and excessive hair shedding.
  • Cystine is an amino acid that has been shown to stimulate hair regrowth and fight hair loss while providing strength to the hair shaft.  Up to 14% of your hair is made up of this amino acid. Dietary sources of Cystine include chicken, broccoli and milk.

3. Use Anti-Breakage Hair Care – Hair that is weak is more susceptible to breakage.  Increasing the strength of your hair will help protect it from damage. Its obvious that collagen and amino acids can help your hair grow stronger from the inside, but it is also important to strengthen your hair rom the outside using products formulated to guard against breakage.  Using a treatment such as the HAIRFINITY Strengthening Amino Masque can help your hair grow longer by infusing it with amino acids and preventing breakage from happening.

HAIRFINITY Advanced Hair Care products are proven reduce breakage by up to 95% in the first use when tested on chemically processed hair heat treated to 450 degrees.

Thin Hair Got You Down Turn Up the Volume!

There are several factors which can cause your hair to become thin over time.  Hair thickness comes from having an adequate amount of keratin protein, which is made up of amino acids, and held together by hydrogen bonds. When there is a sufficient amount of amino acids, hair is thick, strong, and voluminous.

However, when it lacks these building blocks, the hair weakens and can become thin and frail. Amino acids also produce red blood cells that supply nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles further contributing to the health and thickness of each strand.  So whether your hair is becoming thin due to over styling, chemical treatments, or simply aging, adding a supplement such as HAIRFINITY Volume Builder Amino Acid Booster can help replace these hair building nutrients:

  • Cystine is an amino acid that has been shown to stimulate hair regrowth and fight hair loss while providing strength to the hair shaft.  Up to 14% of your hair is made up of this amino acid. Dietary sources of Cystine include chicken, broccoli and milk.
This amino acid can also improve iron absorption to prevent iron deficiency which has been linked to hair loss and excessive hair shedding.
  • Methionine is a sulphur rich amino acid that helps your body produce the keratin protein which is the main material of the hair shaft. It also helps boost collagen production, another protein that makes up the hair structure.  Dietary sources of Methionine include eggs, fish, and sesame seeds.
  • Taurine acts as a protective shield against the negative effects of TGF-beta, a protein that may cause hair loss. It has also been shown to help increase the hair diameter when taken by women who had fine or thin hair.

You may be eating a healthy and balanced diet! But including foods and supplements that contain these can help boost the growth and health of your hair, and also your overall well-being.

Why Are Men Attracted to Healthy Hair?

There are certain undeniable physical attributes about a woman that makes her more physically appealing to men. Truth be told, men are very visual, and they are drawn in by what they see. The eyes, smile, and waist hip ratio are some of the physical traits that attract men to women. Among the top ranking is healthy hair. There’s something that’s quite irresistible to a man about a healthy head of hair. So why is this? Why are men more attracted to healthy hair?

Femininity

Healthy or Long Hair are culturally and timelessly considered to be very feminine. Men visualize femininity when they see a woman with a bountiful head of hair that looks robust and vibrant. The framing of the face with beautiful and healthy locks seem to be more pleasing to the eyes of men. Hair, culturally speaking, is one of the things that defines a woman in a man’s eyes. It is considered, frequently, as beautiful and ladylike.  Often times, men enjoy showcasing a woman that has shiny or long hair to others as a sign of a great prize that they have.  For whatever the reason, the feminine look is often correlated with long or full and healthy hair.

Fertility and Youth

Flowing locks symbolizes youth and fertility. Pregnancy is a time when hair seems to be, for many, at its most thriving stage. It grows at faster rates and sheds less due to the hormones in the body during pregnancy.  Men are often times considering a future mate, and fertility could very well factor in to how they choose one. Youthfulness and healthy hair are often correlated. Let’s face it, looking and feeling young is desirable for not only ourselves but for what we look for in a potential mate. That being said, men desire vitality in women, and the hair is a definite telltale sign of just how vital you are.

Consistency and Dedication

Healthy hair shows that women care enough to take the time to be desirable for them. That extra time and money that it takes to achieve a great mane is quite evident to the opposite sex. Men love to see that women are stable and consistent enough to take time to care for their locks. Many times, long and healthy hair take years to grow and maintain, and that diligence is quite impressive! We are all aware, whether male or female, that healthy hair doesn’t come just by waking up and running our fingers through our mane. The time, consistency, effort, and dedication that it takes to care for your hair are all excellent attributes in a woman, and men actually recognize this!

Health and Good Genes

A flourishing mane often means healthy genes and overall good health. Who doesn’t want a healthy and spry mate? Hair that is shiny, full, and lively indicates good health. Underlying health conditions can present themselves through the way that the hair looks and feels. Hair health also indicates vitamin deficiencies, which in turn may imply the lack of good nutrition. Men often wish for women that are more aware and in tune with good nutritional and health practices.  Good looking hair isn’t just pleasing to the eye, but often indicates a strong healthy individual. Being attracted to healthy hair is quite natural. It also shows a sign of good hygiene and care for one’s self. If good genes are present, of course this means that future children have great chances of inheriting this great head of hair!

Other than the obvious advantages of having a fabulous head of hair, there is one that can’t be ignored. That is drawing the attention of the opposite sex. Men enjoy the hard work and TLC that you’ve put into your mane, even if they don’t verbalize it! Just the mere ogling over your tresses may be enough to say it all!  Don’t underestimate how the health of your hair can be so pleasingly aesthetic that it makes you alluring to men everywhere you go.  You can achieve that healthy and beautiful mane that is so desirable to men. Hairfinity Healthy Hair Vitamins and Booster Supplements nourish your hair from within, creating beautiful hair through inner wellness. Hairfinity is a total hair care system that works from the inside out.

Caring for What’s Beneath the Weave

We all want hair that looks good. Right?  Sometimes we add extensions to give our hair some extra oomph, experiment with a style we wouldn’t dare try on our precious locks or protect our hair while trying to grow it out.  No matter what style you rock, it’s important to care for your real hair and scalp.

We’ve all heard the saying “out of sight, out of mind.”  It’s easy to fall victim to this and neglect your hair while wearing weaves and extensions.

Before You Install the Extensions:

  1. Wash and deep condition your hair.
  2. Hydrate and protect with a leave in conditioner.
  3. Make sure your hair is completely dry.

Daily care while wearing extensions:

  1. Conditioning – use a silicone free leave-in conditioner as needed to keep hair hydrated such as Hairfinity Revitalizing Leave In. Apply directly to your natural hair that is under the extensions.
  2. Oiling – if you are wearing a sew-in weave, try oiling your scalp nightly using a silicone free oil such as Hairfinity Nourishing Botanical Oil. Apply directly to the scalp. Do not apply to the added hair as it may cause it to become too oily.
  3. Protecting Your Hairline – Weaves, braids, and extensions can wreak havoc on your hairline due to tension and dryness. Use a product designed to nourish and protect your hairline such as Hairfinity Infinite Edges Serum.  Also, make sure that your hair is not pulled too tight during the installation of the extensions.

Washing while you are wearing the extensions:

  1. Comb the extension hair thoroughly to remove all tangles.
  2. Use a shampoo designed to clear irritants and free follicles of buildup without stripping hair and scalp of its natural moisture such as the Hairfinity Scalp Purifying Shampoo. This shampoo has a special nozzle that makes it easy to apply the product directly to the scalp.  Apply the shampoo directly to the scalp and hair.  Massage the scalp to lift up dirt.  Rinse the shampoo out of the hair using warm water.  Make sure that you rinse your scalp thoroughly and remove all soap from the scalp.
  3. Use a conditioner designed to nourish, soothe and protect your scalp and natural hair while preventing matting, breakage and dryness such as Hairfinity Moisture Restoring Conditioner. This conditioner has a special nozzle that makes it easy to apply the product directly to the scalp.Let the conditioner sit on the hair for a few minutes and then rinse.  You can also deep condition both your exposed natural hair and added hair.
  4. Dry the hair completely.

After removing the extensions:

It is very, very important to have your extensions removed by a professional.  If not removed properly, you could lose a lot of hair.

  1. Make sure the hair is properly detangled and ALL shed hairs have been brushed out before washing. Not doing this can cause the hair to become extremely
  2. Wash your hair
  3. Deep Condition
  4. Dry the hair completely.

Hairfinity’s Beneath the Weave products are formulated with cooling, soothing ingredients to nourish your natural hair and scalp when extensions, weaves or protective styles are part of your look. Stops scalp itch while hydrating and refreshing. This line can also be used without extensions for scalp protection and nourishment.  Ingredients include:

  • Aloe
  • Neem Leaf Extract
  • Glycerin
  • Coconut Oil
  • Marshmallow Leaf/Root Extract
  • Olive Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Peppermint Oil

Get to the “Root” of Hair Problems

Your hair is as unique as you are.  This is why you can’t always get to the “root” of your hair issues with just the naked eye. Evaluating the hair at a microscopic level can help identify the cause of hair problems and help determine the best way to care for your specific head of hair.  Hairfinity’s Microscopic Hair Analysis Testing can evaluate the hair’s strength, texture and more. These findings are then used to create a customized plan tailored precisely to your hair’s unique needs.

Microscopic Analysis

This test identifies the hair’s shape and pattern, splits in the hair’s ends and shaft, and damage to the hair’s cuticle and cortex.  To fully understand what is necessary to take care of your hair, you must first understand its structure. Hair is made up of three layers, which include the cuticle (outer layer), the cortex (middle layer), and the medulla (innermost layer).

  • The cuticle is made up overlapping cells that look like roof tiles. It gives the hair its color, shape, strength and elasticity and determines how the hair looks and feels. Chemical processing and styling can cause the cuticle to lift making the hair susceptible to damage.
  • The medulla is the innermost portion of the hair shaft. All hair does not have
complete medulla, and finer hair types can have no medulla at all.
  • The cortex is made up keratin protein strands that act as rubber bands and give the hair its strength or elasticity. A weakened cortex will allow hair to break if it is stretched.

While all hair may have the same underlying structure, it cannot be treated the same because of the differences in hair shapes and patterns. Your hair shape determines your hair type.  If you looked at the cross-sections of the different hair types, you would find that kinky hair is elliptical in shape, wavy hair is oval, and straight hair is round.

  • Elliptical (Kinky): As you go down the hair strand of this hair type, you’ll find twists and turns known as kinks. At every kink, the hair is much thinner and susceptible to breakage and damage. Kinky hair also has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type and the cuticle layers tend to be raised. This makes highly textured hair extremely susceptible to damage.
  • Round (Straight): When you look at a cross section of straight hair, it is round, and the hair’s cuticles also lay flat making straight hair stronger, and better at retaining moisture than any other hair type. Asian hair is the only hair that is perfectly round.
  • Oval (Wavy): The cross section of wavy hair is oval and the cuticle is flat allowing the hair to reflect light and retain moisture.  Wavy hair is much stronger than kinky hair, but not as strong as straight. hair. Caucasian hair is usually oval in shape.

Tensile Strength Test

This test determines how much tension your hair can handle before it breaks. Hair is strong. A single strand could hold up to 100 grams (3oz) in weight. Healthy hair, when wet, will stretch up to 55% of its original length and return to its normal shape without breaking, while dry hair will only stretch about 20%.  However, certain hair types are stronger and more elastic than others.  Kinky hair is the most fragile holding only 60 grams and stretching 40% before breaking.  Straight hair on the other hand, can hold up to 100 grams and stretch 55% before breaking.

Hair Diameter Test

This test determines the hair diameter (thickness/thinness) so you know how to properly care for your hair. Most people describe their hair as either thick or thin. However, the number of hairs you have can affect the thickness as well as the actual diameter (size) of each hair.  Fine hair will normally be more prone to breakage. Babies and young children have finer hair than adults. As a person grows up, their hair becomes thicker and stronger.  Then in older age hair can become thinner and finer again. Another factor is that, the closer to the root of the hair, the thicker a strand of hair would be.

How Does Hairfinity’s Microscopic Hair Analysis Testing Work?

After ordering the Complete Hair Analysis, expect a kit to arrive with instructions on how to send in your hair sample. Once the sample is received, your hair will be tested, and a report on the condition of your hair will be created along with a customized plan of action to address your hair concerns. Test results and hair care plan are detailed and easy to read, and include hair care tips and product recommendations.

Please note: Customer’s hair must be at least 4 inches long. We will need at least 20 strands to obtain accurate results.

Allow up to 4 weeks for test results and hair care plan to be completed and emailed to the address provided in your order.
